-ER and -IR verbs whose stems end in a vowel (such as le/er, constru/ir, o/ir, ca/er, etc.) will need a change from -ió to -yó in the third person singular form (él, ella, usted).

 

They also will need a change from -ieron to -yeron in the third person plural (ellos, ellas, ustedes)

 

Simply put, this means that you CANNOT have three vowels in a row!!!

 

All other forms remain the same.

 

 

EXAMPLE:  leer (to read)

 

Yo                         leí

Tú                         leiste

Él/Ella, Usted         leyó

(if I didn't change to a "y", it would be leió, which is not a word in Spanish)

 

Nosotros               leimos

Vosotros               leeís

Ellos/Ellas/Ustedes  leyeron
